Inspired by Jazz
artspace Gallery, Richmond, VA, 2020

In all of its forms, music shares with art many of the same terms to describe its characteristics. Composition, form, color, tone, texture, mood, rhythm, and more, are all shared terms. The relationships are nothing short of striking. I’ve attempted to capture some of these shared characteristics in these eleven artworks produced in acrylics and molding paste.

Each 10" x 10" panel in the series represents my visual interpretati
on of emotions, playing styles and distinctive sounds produced by jazz musicians and vocalists. The entire composition represents the collaboration of these expressions into four measures of a finished piece of music.

“A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence.”
Leopold Stokowski
